Shakespeare's Macbeth?

E-mail Print PDF

Some Thespians state:"Macbeth, is a play of man against himself."

Did William Shakespeare really pen his play of Macbeth to be a play of man against himself?  Man against himself, as not to acknowledge anything but the power of mankind, that there is no supernatural.

Did William Shakespeare really pen his mighty character of Macbeth to endure a fight like no other Macbeth had ever endured to be reduced to be merely a fight against his own greed?

Lets explore dialogue given to Banquo...

Note: (Modern day translation Text in Bold) is for those who may not be familiar with the works of Shakespeare in helping them to better understand the dialogue of the original text. Shakespeare Made Easy, a publication by Barrons, offers the play of Macbeth in modern day text, which we could not reproduce here. We could only offer our own modern day text here as a substitute, which should not be taken as accurate, but only as being somewhere within the ball park of what was actually being stated from the original text.

Original Text, just below.

Banquo: "That trusted home might yet enkindle you unto the crown, besides the thane of Cawdor. But tis strange: and often times to win us to our harm the instruments of darkness tell us truths, win us with honest trifles, to betray's in deepest consequence."

Our own Modern day text, below. (Our own Ball park suggestion)

Banquo: Those prophecies just given you by those Witches may also come true. But do heed this Macbeth. Evil itself may be seeking your destruction with tactics of forgery to persuade, to appease your physical being, with an objective of only to utterly destroy your very own soul.

Q: Did Shakespeare mean his play of Macebth to be a play of Man against himself, against his own greed?

Q: Or, was the play of Macbeth penned by Shakespeare to be a play of a battle of all battles for his character of Macbeth to battle against an Evil Entity for his soul, where brandished steel had no effect?
